Random Photo Monday: Spite House

This little blue house is the “Spite House,” in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Located on Queen Street, it was originally built in 1830 by John Hollensbury who owned one of the adjacent houses and wanted to keep loiterers and noisy horse-drawn wagons out of his alley.

The house is two stories high and only seven feet wide, and has about 330 square feet of living space. It’s a private residence, so you can’t look inside unless you know the owners. But that bright blue color certainly helps it stand out from its neighbors, doesn’t it?

Added later:
I hadn’t thought about it at the time I first put this up this morning, but this sort of fits in with Smiling Sally’s Blue Monday meme. See other offerings or participate yourself by visiting her blog.

  1. It looks like a giant doll house! Wouldn't it be a great place for a little, unique bookstore or needlework shop? I just love it.

  2. It fits in PERFECTLY for Blue Monday! I'm so glad you've decided to play. You know I grew up in DC, so these row houses look familiar to me. This cute blue one is a shotgun house if ever there was one--called such because you could stand in the front room, shot a rifle, and the bullet would fly out the back door. Happy Blue Monday!

  3. Only 7 feet wide. That's pretty narrow!

  8. My mind just can't quite figure what I'd do with a skinny house like that. It must take real talent to decorate it. Shoot, how do you set up the furniture so you can still walk?
