Our World Tuesday: Week 95

A month or so back, the local public library held a book sale to raise a little extra money.  They were selling books by the bag ($10 per bagful), so you know the hubby and I couldn't miss that.  We only have several thousand books hanging around the place already.

The sale was well-attended, by the young and the not so young, all together.  In fact, I was surprised (and pleased) to see how many people are still attracted to "real" books, in this age of the Kindle and the Nook and their ilk.

It was held in the elementary school auditorium/gymnasium, so there was plenty of space for the books and shoppers.

Yes, we only have the ONE elementary school -- it's a small community, folks.

AND...there was a bake sale, too!  So you could feed your mind and your sweet tooth at the same time! How great is that?

When it was all over and done, the library had raised several thousand dollars for new books, and we picked up a nice haul of new reading matter.

But we did manage to exercise some self-control and bypass all those brownies and cupcakes!

Blue Monday: New Planter

Blue Monday is hosted weekly by Smiling Sally.

Well, it looks like summer is really here, even if not yet officially.  We've had high temps in the mid-90s for several days now, and more heat is predicted this week.  Of course, this IS Central Texas, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  But what does surprise me is how fast this year is ripping by -- can you believe it's the middle of JUNE already? (!!!)

SO... since outdoor weather has been back for a while, we've been getting our front porch in shape for activity (well, when the tarantulas and giant scorpions and hornets the size of sparrows give us a chance to get out there). Bought some new furniture a few weeks ago, and over the weekend I picked up a new (OK -- "previously owned") planter at a Salvation Army store in Austin.  It's going on the corner of the porch, to fill up an empty spot that's been bothering me.

Doesn't it have some very nice BLUE flowers?

The problem is going to be finding a plant for it.  It'll be right in the pathway of all the deer that pass our place -- thus, very convenient for munching.  Last year, we had one of these Chinese Fringe Flower plants in that spot, and even though it was supposed to be "deer-proof," the little dears (hee-hee!) completely stripped it of leaves and blooms in just a matter of hours after it appeared.

So at the moment we're looking for something that's decorative and not dangerous, but not too yummy. Any suggestions?

ABC Wednesday: "V" is for...

Well, around here, V is for VERA -- as in Vera Bradley. Have to admit, I'm something of a Vera Bradley junkie fan. Here's my latest haul:

The darker print is called "Ellie Blue" and I love it because of the little elephants in the trim.  The lighter print is one of my all-time favorite Vera fabrics -- called "Doodle Daisy," it's shown here on an e-reader sleeve I bought for my new Kindle.  I've also got Doodle Daisy stickers plastered all over my laptop. The print reminds me so much of all those spacey florals so popular in the '60s and '70s.  (Yes, dear -- you definitely ARE the oldest hippie chick around.)

[Note: I am in no way affiliated with or employed by the Vera Bradley folks.  I just love their products. And I'm absolutely not encouraging anyone to buy VB stuff -- it's a very addictive act.]
