With all the wet weather we've had this spring, the bug population around here has zoomed. I'm not a real insect enthusiast, but I do like taking photos of some of the more interesting critters, and this caught my eye yesterday. Now I know that technically spiders aren't really "bugs" (and the hubby tells me that daddy long legs aren't like other spiders -- more like ticks), but all these creepy-crawlies seem pretty much the same to me.

At first, I thought "Tarantula!" |
We have several of these clumps (or
clusters) of daddy long leg spiders (or do you call them
granddaddy long legs?) under the eaves of our house. At first, it just looks like one big spider, but as you get closer, you realize it's a bunch of individuals making up a huge clot of thingies (sort of like the Borg in Star Trek).

Togetherness, spider-style |
And every now and then, one spider will make a break for it and go it alone. I'm wondering if it comes back to the bunch after reconnoitering or if it's on its own for good.

I've heard that Daddy Longlegs are much more poisonous than any other spider, but they can't bite humans. Not sure if that is true!
ReplyDeleteHi, Deb! I've always heard that too. But I won't be doing anything to test that bit of info! Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your weekend!
DeleteIs it safe to assume that these were removed immediately after their photo shoot? I haven't seen any daddy longlegs here but we sure did have them in San Antonio. I don't like them. I don't like bugs. Yuck.
ReplyDeleteNow, Cuzzie -- these critters are supposed to eat all kinds of other thingies, so we're just leaving them for now. I always sort of liked them in S.A. -- they used to be all over the carport when I played out there. Never saw such big clumps before, though. Yeah, yuck is right!
Deleteyes, I remember them on the carports -- I always thought they were harmless so I wasn't really afraid, just sort of squimish.
DeleteThanks, Vicki! I don't like most bugs, but I do sort of like spiders. They eat the other bugs and they're fun to watch. Thanks for the visit, and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteSupposedly spiders are good for eating other bugs. I find it hard to leave them alone though. I have never seen a great bunch like that. Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the really little spiders. But the big ones scare me -- except for these long-legged ones. They look so much like something from outer space!
DeleteThanks for the visit today. Hope your weekend is happy!
Oooh scary. There are a lot of daddy longlegs around the house here but they usually just hide in the corners. Never as one big mass like that

I've never seen daddy long legs like that. It's fascinating.
