Saturday 9: Drivers License

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted each week by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

Drivers License (2021)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1. This song is about a girl who just got her drivers license. Who taught you to drive?

I took a Drivers Ed course in junior high, back in the Pleistocene age, so I could get my learner's permit. But back then I didn't really have access to a car that I could use very often, so never bothered to get a license. I didn't get my first driver's license until after I was married. My husband gave me a "refresher course" behind the wheel and taught me how to use a clutch. Don't remember the name of the teacher who taught the driving course.

2. Do you like your drivers license/state ID photo?

Well, I don't really like it, but it's not terrible. It was taken almost ten years ago, though, when I was about 30 pounds heavier and had longer hair. So it really doesn't look much like I look now. When I get my license renewed next year, I suppose they might make me have a new photo taken. Texas is a little loose when it comes to that sort of thing.

3. Think back to the first ticket you received. How old were you, and what was it for?

Fortunately (and knock wood), I've never gotten a ticket. I'm a pretty careful driver.

4. In this week's song, Olivia Rodrigo is brokenhearted, driving through her boyfriend's neighborhood, certain that he has taken up with the sophisticated blonde girl. When it comes to romance, do you have a jealous streak?

Romance? Jealous streak? Hmmm. I don't think so, but I really don't remember.

5. Olivia grew up in Temucula, California. Temecula is home to 40 wineries and dozens of tasting rooms. Have you ever attended a wine tasting?

No. I've been to a winery — there are quite a few here in the Texas hill country. But no wine tastings. Always thought it would be fun, though.

6. Her first on-screen appearance was in a commercial for Old Navy stores. Old Navy is owned by the same company as Banana Republic, Gap and Athletica. Have you done any of your holiday shopping at one of those stores? (Yes, their websites count.)

No. I don't do that much holiday shopping anymore, and it's mostly done online. But I haven't visited any of those stores (or their websites) for several years.

7. She went on to star in projects for Disney studios. That's also how pop stars Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, and Christina Aguilera got started. Arguably the first teen star created by Disney studios was Annette Funicello. Do you remember her?

YES! She was my favorite Mouseketeer. Well, Annette along with Darlene Gillespie. I used to hurry home from elementary school so I could see the Mickey Mouse Club and watch the Merry Mouseketeers go through their paces every day. Every day? I think it was every day. Anyway, I loved Annette. She was so sweet and talented and obviously well-endowed under all that preteen costuming. I even loved her in those crazy bikini beach movies. So sad she's not with us now.

8. "Drivers License" was one of this year's most popular songs. One of this year's most popular books is John Grisham's The Judge's List. Do you expect to do much reading between now and the end of the year? If so, what's on your TBR (to be read) list?

Well, I've got several books going at the moment — Capote's Women, by Laurence Leamer; Death in a White Tie, one of Ngaio Marsh's classic Inspector Alleyn mysteries; and Bryant & May: London Bridge Is Falling Down, by Christopher Fowler, the latest entry in his Peculiar Crimes Unit series. I've also been reading Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre this year, and still have several chapters to go. I would love to finish just one or two of these books, but I'm not really going to have much time for reading during the next few weeks.

9. Random Question: What is the longest line you ever stood in, and was it worth it?

Longest in terms of feet and inches? Or minutes and hours? In general, I try to avoid standing in lines of any kind. But I remember standing in line for several hours to get in to see the first "Star Wars" movie back in 1977. At the time, I thought it was worth it — I had a lot more time on my hands back then. If we're talking physical length (not time spent), then I guess I'd say the line we stood in to get our second shot of the covid vaccine was just about the longest I remember. And that line was definitely worth standing in.
By the way — do you stand "in line" or stand "on line"? I think it's probably a regional thing, but I'm definitely an "in line" stander.

Saturday 9: Waiting for Tonight

So.... It's been a while since I posted anything here at joysweb. I've been concentrating on my book blog lately. Well, actually, I've mostly just been trying to get through "cedar season" here in the Texas hill country. The allergies have been driving me crazy and the allergy meds keep me slightly comatose a lot of the time.

But I'm awake now (hi, there!), and thought I'd make an appearance before the year gets much further along. And what better way to make a comeback than with some Saturday 9 questions?! So here we go....

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

Waiting for Tonight,
by Jennifer Lopez (1999)

1. In this song, Jennifer Lopez anticipates a night of unbridled passion with the love of her life. What are you waiting for tonight? (No pressure; it doesn't have to be as thrilling as hers.)

Hmmm. Can't say I'm really waiting for anything. Except the COVID vaccine, of course. And it looks like I'm likely to be waiting quite a while for that.

2. She sings that she's glad she's beyond those nights that found her tossing and turning alone in her bed. Did you enjoy restful sleep last night?

I think I did. Felt pretty rested this morning. Don't remember having any problems getting to sleep or staying that way. That's not always the case — I've never been a really great sleeper.

 3. Whatever Jennifer has planned for tonight, it won't include alcohol. She never drinks liquor. What's the last adult beverage you enjoyed?

We usually have a little wine with dinner every night, so tonight's glass was my last "adult" beverage. It was a very tasty Shiraz.

4. Ms. Lopez performed "Waiting for Tonight" during last year's Super Bowl halftime show. Will you be watching The Big Game this weekend?

Most likely. We watch it every year. The hubby isn't as much of a football fan as he used to be, but we do still watch a lot of football. It was more fun to watch back when the Cowboys were actually winning games.

 5. Speaking of this weekend, The Weeknd will headline the Super Bowl 2021 halftime show. Are you a fan of his?

I have absolutely no idea who or what The Weeknd (sp?) might be, but I'm willing to give said Weeknd the benefit of the doubt, for now.

6. Super Bowl Sunday is the #1 day for guacamole consumption in the US. When did you most recently eat something with avocado in it?

I had avocado toast for lunch today. We eat avocado just about everyday. It's a superfood. Appropriate, I guess, for the Super Bowl.

7. Chicken wings are a popular Super Bowl dish, too. When did you most recently eat chicken? How was it prepared?

Wow, I really can't remember the last time I had chicken. The hubby doesn't eat chicken. So if I had it, it would probably have been in a restaurant. And I haven't been in a restaurant since early March, last year.

8. This year, fast food chain Chipotle will run their first-ever Super Bowl ad. Do you pay closer attention to commercials during the Super Bowl?

Yes, probably. Some of the Super Bowl ads are pretty entertaining. In fact, in recent years some of them have been more entertaining than the half-time shows — and certainly more memorable.

9. Random question: Are you more likely to pretend to be more naive than you really are, or more sophisticated?

Neither. All that pretending sounds like a lot of work.

Saturday 9: So Emotional

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"So Emotional"
by Whitney Houston (1987)

1. Whitney sings that she keeps her lover's photo beside her bed. What's on your bedside table?

No photos, but lots of other stuff. Here goes: A reading lamp; a box of tissues; a little plastic Fendi box that holds my earplugs; my iPad and a charger; a white ceramic plate with a miniature replica of an Egyptian cat sculpture sitting on it; and a stack of acid-free boxes that contain my collection of Betsy McCall paper dolls. And if I'm in bed, my phone will be there too. My bedside table is actually a small file cabinet, so it's a little larger than the average nightstand.

2. She's getting frustrated, waiting for the phone to ring. If your phone were to ring right now, who would you expect to be on the other end?

Well, right now it's around 9pm, and we don't generally get phone calls at this time of night. If we did, it would more than likely be a call from family or friends with bad news. Or a wrong number.

3. The video was filmed at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, PA. It seats 6,200. As the nation reopens from Covid19, would you feel comfortable sitting knee-to-knee with a stranger in an arena like this?

Definitely no. I'm just not ready for much "reopening" yet.

4. This week's featured artist, Whitney Houston, appeared on the daytime drama As The World Turns. She played herself, performing with Jermaine Jackson at the Miss Cinderella contest in the fictional town of Oakdale. Have you ever been hooked on a soap opera?

Yes, back in the '70s and early '80s I used to watch All My Children religiously. I seem to remember that it came on around lunchtime, and for several years I would come home for lunch everyday (my job was within walking distance) and watch the show while I ate my peanut butter sandwich.

5. Whitney had a sweet tooth, and her favorite breakfast cereal was Fruity Pebbles. Do you often eat cereal for lunch or dinner?

I eat some kind of cereal for breakfast everyday. Never eat it for lunch or dinner, but sometimes I eat a little as a bedtime snack.

6. At Whitney's wedding to Bobby Brown, her bridesmaids all wore lavender dresses and the groomsmen had custom made alligator shoes. Have you ever "stood up" for a friend or relative? If so, do you remember what you wore?

Yes, I have "stood up." Twice. And yes, I do remember what I wore. Sort of. Both were long dresses. One was sleeveless (right, Cuzzie?) and one had elbow-length sleeves. I think both dresses were pink (or pink-ish). And both times, my grandmother made the dress I wore — she was a wonderful seamstress. I've got photos of both dresses, somewhere — if I wasn't so lazy, I'd go look for them.

7. In 1987, the year this song was popular, Cher won the Oscar for Moonstruck. Her most famous line was, "Snap out of it!" When you think of Cher, do you first think of her movies, her TV show, or her music?

Probably her music (I've always loved her voice), but I like a lot of her movie work, too. Never watched the TV show much.

8. Michael Douglas won the Oscar that year for Wall Street. His most famous line was, "Greed is good." His character goes on to say that, "Greed in all its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of all mankind." Do you agree?

Sounds right. Unfortunately, I think those greedy urges are also likely to wipe us out. Possibly sooner than I expected.

9. Random question: When you woke up this morning, were you ready to get out of bed? Or do you wish you could have snoozed for a bit longer?

I always feel like I could snooze just a little longer. Never been one to hop out of bed and get going right away. And it seems the older I get, the harder it is to get up at what the rest of the world considers a "reasonable hour."

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Saturday 9: The Rain, The Park and Other Things

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"The Rain, The Park & Other Things"
by The Cowsills (1967)

1. The Cowsills were a family band who had three hit singles. Can you name another group of popular singing siblings?
The Osmonds, Jackson Five, Everly Brothers, Beach Boys (or were they cousins?), Pointer Sisters, Isley Brothers, Lennon Sisters, Bee Gees. I could go on, but they'd all be "vintage" groups — I haven't really kept up with more recent singing groups.
2. This was their first hit, and it reached #2 on the Billboard charts. It was kept out of the #1 slot by the Monkees and "Daydream Believer." What's your favorite Monkees song?
I like both of their "believer" songs — "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer." But my favorite has always been "Listen to the Band," written by Michael Nesmith (hear it). I believe it was the first time they got to perform music actually written by one of the group. I was never really a Monkees fan, but they had some very good people writing their music — Neil Diamond, John Stewart, Carole King, Boyce & Hart, Paul Williams, and Nesmith himself. And even though they took a lot of flack for not being a "real" group, they were genuinely four very talented guys.
3. After seeing the Cowsill brothers perform with their mother and sister, TV producers were inspired to create the sitcom, The Partridge Family. Did you ever watch it?
No. I've seen clips from it over the years, but never saw a whole episode.
4. In the song, the narrator takes a flower from a girl in the park. Are there flowers in your home right now?
Not inside the house. I'm allergic to most flowers.
5. He isn't sure if the girl was real, or if he dreamed her. Tell us about a recent dream you had.
I don't really remember how recently I've dreamed it, but one of my most frequent recurring dreams is the one about being out somewhere and needing to make a phone call and discovering that my phone doesn't work, or I've forgotten how to use it (!), or I've left it somewhere. They tell me it's an anxiety dream and very common. Wouldn't be so scary if there were still any pay-phones around. Remember phone booths? I used to love phone booths.
6. At the height of the Cowsills' popularity, they were hired by the American Dairy Association to promote drinking milk. If we were to peek into your refrigerator right now, would we find any milk?
Only soy milk. The hubby and I are both slightly lactose intolerant.
7. After the band stopped performing together, John Cowsill went on to become a back up musician for the Beach Boys. His job has kept him on the road much of the time. When you travel, do you enjoy staying in hotels, or would you rather stay with friends/family?
I enjoy both, but I'm really not a great traveler, no matter where I'm staying. Don't think I'll be doing any traveling anytime soon, though.
8. In 1967, the year this song was popular, Elvis married Priscilla in Las Vegas. Have you attended any weddings yet this year? Are there any weddings in your future?
No weddings, for several years now. None coming up this year, that I know about. Which is just as well. I probably would not be eager to attend any big gatherings at the moment.
9. Random question: Are the bottoms of your feet ticklish?
Hmmm. I think so. Anyway they used to be. Nobody's tickled me lately. And isn't that just a little sad?

Saturday 9: When Love Goes Wrong, Nothing Goes Right

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"When Love Goes Wrong,
Nothing Goes Right" (1953)

1. This is from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Have you seen it?
Yes, I have, on TV many years ago.
2. The lyrics tell us that, when love goes wrong, "a match won't light." When did you most recently light a match?
Probably the last time I lit a candle. And I haven't done that in the last couple of weeks.
3. The duet is performed at a French sidewalk cafe, where Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe are (literally) sharing a cup of coffee. With whom did you most recently have coffee?
The hubby, this morning.
4. The tune was written by prolific composer Hoagy Carmichael. He was influenced by his mother, who earned extra money for the family playing piano during silent movies. Who in your life influenced your career choices?
This is sort of a sensitive subject for me. I always say I didn't really have a career -- I mostly just had jobs. I was more influenced by circumstances than by any one person.
5. Jane and Marilyn shared something beyond movie stardom. They were both married to Hall of Famers. Marilyn Monroe was married to Joe DiMaggio, who was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1955. Jane was married to quarterback Bob Waterfield, inducted into the football Hall of Fame in 1965. Which sport would you rather watch: baseball or football?
Football. I'm not much of a baseball fan.
6. Jane and Bob Waterfield were high school sweethearts at Van Nuys High. The Southern California school was used as a set for the 1982 movie, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Tell us something about your high school.
I went to the same high school my parents went to, although it had been relocated to a different part of town by the time I was a student there. It still exists, but it's been almost completely reconstructed over the last few years and really doesn't look the same. As far as I know, there have never been any movies filmed there.
7. Marilyn and Joe DiMaggio met on a blind date at a Hollywood restaurant called Villa Nova. Have you ever arranged a blind date? If so, did the couple hit it off and end up dating?
My husband and I once tried getting a couple of our friends together. They seemed to have lots in common and we thought they'd be the perfect couple. They met once, for lunch, and couldn't stand each other. Not something I'd ever do again.
8. In 1953, when Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was released, a tornado did severe damage to Waco, TX. Tell us about a major weather event that you endured (tornado, hurricane, flood, blizzard, heat wave, etc.).
Here we go. Actually, I'm sort of a magnet for bad weather. We were living in Chicago during the big blizzard in the winter of 1979-1980. It was the coldest, snowy-est winter they'd had in the 20th Century, and there were snowdrifts up to the rooftops of houses everywhere. The city couldn't do any snow removal because there was no place to remove it to. No traffic moved. We never knew how long the electricity would stay on. There was only one grocery store that stayed open in our neighborhood, and a trek there and back home could take all day. That experience was not fun and did not improve my opinion of snow. (But I loved Chicago, in spite of the dreadful weather.)
I've been around a couple of tornados — one in Louisiana, and one in Virginia that was actually pretty deadly. Fortunately, I've always been on the edge of the storms — close enough to see and feel them, but away from the major damage. I've also been through a couple of earthquakes — one in Mexico City and one while we lived in Alexandria, Virginia. The Virginia earthquake lasted for almost a minute plus several aftershocks. It was really very scary, especially since we were living in a highrise at the time. When you're several stories up in a building and the ground starts shifting underneath you, it's definitely terrifying.
9. Random question: You see a filthy puddle. Floating on top are cigarette butts, a leaf, and a $1 bill. Would you bend over and rescue the dollar?
Sorry, I stopped reading after "filthy puddle."

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Saturday 9: Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey"
by Paul McCartney & Wings (1971)

1. The lyrics tell us Paul believes it's going to rain. How's the weather where you are today?
I'm writing this on Friday, May 29th (not Saturday yet), and the weather has been lovely all day. Well, lovely by my standards anyway – mostly sunny, with the high temp somewhere in the low 90s. A little more humid than I like it, but that's OK. I know a lot of people around here are upset about such hot weather in May, but I'm loving it. I try to take a "photo of the day" every afternoon ‒ this is the one for today:

2. Paul sings that he is sorry because he hasn't "done a bloody thing all day." What do you hope to accomplish this weekend?
These days I don't set my sights very high. I'm hoping to get through the weekend with no major dental or medical problems, and no surprise bad news announcements from family or friends.
I'd also like to get some reading done.
3. He also references butter pie, which is made primarily with potatoes (with onions and, of course, butter). That dish is not popular on this side of the Atlantic. Last time you had potatoes, how were they prepared (baked, mashed, hash browned, french fried ...)?
Baked, I think. I eat a lot of potatoes, since I had oral surgery not long ago (getting some implants) and there's not a lot I can actually CHEW right now. For the last few weeks (well, more like months), mashed or baked potatoes have been a big part of my diet. Also potato soup. If I ever get this dental adventure over and done with, I would not be terribly unhappy if I never ate another potato for the rest of my life. (I'd make an exception for potato chips.)
4. Linda McCartney is credited as co-writer and performer on this recording. Paul and Linda were partners in real life, too; married 29 years, they raised four children together. They often said they tried never to spend more than a few hours apart. Do you enjoy a lot of togetherness, or do you value your personal time? Has your experience with Covid19 and quarantine changed how you feel about this?
I'd have to say yes to both those choices. I do value time spent on my own, but I love spending time with the hubby too. Also love seeing family and friends, of course – but right now we're still "staying home" and don't really see many people except each other. So the pandemic hasn't really changed the way I feel, but it has changed the way I function.
5. Paul and Linda came from very different backgrounds. His family was lower middle class, lived in Liverpool's public housing and received government aid. She grew up in affluent Scarsdale, the daughter of a wealthy theatrical attorney. Do you think it's more important for a couple to share a common background, or to share common interests?
I don't think there's any strict rule about that. When it clicks, it clicks.
6. Paul is known for his work ethic. At age 78, he's still making music and performing live. What's your favorite Paul McCartney song?
Wow, so many to choose from, but most are also John Lennon songs. Of the songs written by Paul on his own, I guess I'd pick Maybe I'm Amazed, from his first solo album.
7. In 1971, when this song was a hit, Bobby Fischer was the world's most famous and highest-rated chess player. Do you play chess?
No. I've tried, but never have been able to maintain interest long enough to learn.
8. England's Princess Anne turned 21 in 1971. The occasion was commemorated by a formal portrait, taken by celebrated fashion photographer Norman Parkinson. Who took the most recent photo of you?
Probably me. I've taken several selfies lately. By the way, Princess Anne is my favorite royal, after the Queen. The royal family is so entertaining, aren't they?
9. Random question: Do you find it more satisfying to work with your hands, or your head?
Well, I like doing both, but the arthritis in my hands has sort of limited me to more "cerebral" activities these days. But that's OK. Gives me more time for reading.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Saturday 9: On the Radio

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"On the Radio"
by Donna Summer (1979)

1. The action begins when a letter falls out of the pocket of a brown overcoat. What color is your coat?
I have a lot of coats. Most of them are leftovers from the time I spent living in Virginia. Most of them are black. But I also have a red wool short coat, a dark green parka, a light blue rain jacket, and a sort of beige puffy jacket. I don't have any brown coats.
2. The lyrics ask if it "kinda strikes you sad when you hear our song." We don't want to be sad this Saturday, so we're asking what song makes you happy.
Well, since we're talking Disco, I'll say Dancing Queen by Abba. We heard it in the supermarket the other day and I started singing right along. It always makes me feel happy. I asked my husband and the young grocery checker if they'd like to see me do my dancing queen routine. They both said no!
3. Right before this song hit the charts, Donna Summer hit the cover of Newsweek. Are there any magazines in your home now? If yes, who is on the cover?
There are hundreds of magazines in my home right at this minute. Most of them are years old. I tend to accumulate magazines without really noticing it. I have no idea who's on the cover of most of them. But the Vanity Fair on the coffee table in front of me here has someone named Ana de Armas on the cover. I have no idea who she is or why they chose her for a cover shot. I will Google her.
4. Donna wrote the lyrics to this song, while producer Giorgio Moroder wrote the tune. Moroder is known as "the father of disco." Is disco a genre you enjoy?
Some of it. I used to like it lot back in the '70s — loved to dance to the BeeGees. Even got the hubby to learn to do the Hustle. Of course, we were both very young back then, and a lot more limber.
5. This song got additional airplay throughout the 1980s because the game show The Price Is Right played it every time a contestant won a stereo. Today, the most popular audio equipment sold at Best Buy is a sound bar to improve the quality of TV audio. Have you added a sound bar or sound system to your TV?
We have a Sonos sound system in the house, and we could play the TV through that. I think my husband would like to install a sound bar — he looks at them whenever we're out shopping. But I'm not sure I really want all that sound booming at me all the time.
6. Moroder has won two Academy Awards for Best Song. The first was for "Flashdance ... What a Feeling" from Flashdance and the second was for "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun. Do you  have a favorite movie soundtrack?
Haven't listened to any movie soundtracks for quite a while. I used to like the soundtrack from Barry Lyndon, the Stanley Kubrick film. Also loved the soundtracks from A Hard Day's Night and Help!, the Beatles' movies.
7. He grew up in Ortsei, Italy. Located in Northern Italy, the Ortsei economy is fueled by tourists who ski in winter, hike in summer and shop for woodcarvings all year around. Do out-of-towners find their way to your hometown more often in summer or winter?
My hometown is San Antonio TX, and they get tourists at all times of the year.
8. Kourtney Kardashian was born in 1979, the year this record was a hit. Keeping Up with the Kardashians has been on since 2007. Have you ever seen it?
No. I'm not even really sure who the Kardashians are, or why anyone would want to keep up with them.
9. Random question — When getting dressed in the morning, what's the second item of clothing you put on?
Second item? Well, when I get out of bed, I usually throw on the sweats that I wear for my morning stretching workout. So I guess the second thing I put on is usually a sports bra. Unless I'm going bra-less that day. OK, I guess that might be too much info. And not a pretty picture, believe me.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Saturday 9: Waiting All Day for Sunday Night

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"Waiting All Day for Sunday Night"
by Faith Hill (2012)

1. This week's Saturday 9 has a football theme because there's a big game Sunday. Will you be watching?
Probably. We generally do watch the Super Bowl, even though our favorite teams are almost never in it.
2. The Super Bowl is a big day for food consumption in the US, second only to Thanksgiving. What's on your menu this weekend?
I have no idea. We're not having a Super Bowl gathering – it'll just be the Hubs and myself, so we'll probably be having our usual Sunday night dinner. Which could be just about anything.
3. The NFL has decreed that the Super Bowl will never be played in a city that has a median February temperature of less than 50º. Would your hometown qualify for the Big Game?
Well, my hometown is San Antonio TX, and I really don't have any idea what the median February temperature is. Generally, the winters are pretty mild down there, although February can be really icy – at least for short periods. But San Antonio has the rodeo and stock show in February, and I remember attending years ago, walking around the exhibits in western garb and not being terribly bothered by the cold. So yeah – they could probably play a Super Bowl game there in February.
4. This version of the NFL theme song mentions the Steelers and the Broncos. During the regular season, which team do you root for? How did they do in 2019?
How 'bout them Cowboys!!!  I've always been a Dallas Cowboys fan, but I like the New Orleans Saints too. (Used to live in Shreveport.) The Cowboys haven't done very well for about a decade now, and didn't even make it to the playoffs this year. The Saints did a little better, but lost their "wild card" game, so no Super Bowl this year.
5. This version of the Sunday Night Football song is by Faith Hill. She also has ties to the MLB, since her husband is Tim McGraw, son of the Mets' pitcher Tug McGraw. Which sport do you prefer – baseball or football?
I love the Sunday Night Football opening and theme song – sometimes it's the best thing about the game! But I did not know that about Tim McGraw being Tug McGraw's son. How did I miss that? Anyway.... I hardly ever watch baseball – the games just take too long now. I used to like it a lot when I was a kid. My grandmother watched baseball games on TV (or at least, she used to have them on all the time – not sure how much she really watched), and I got hooked. But now I'm much more of a football fan. I do usually watch some of the World Series games, though. Actually, the hubby likes basketball (Go, Spurs!), so we watch more of that than either of the other sports.
6. Faith has performed live at more than one The Super Bowl in the past, performing both "America, the Beautiful" and "The Star Spangled Banner. What's your favorite patriotic song?
Hmmm. Interesting question. Patriotic, as in pro-USA? Probably "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie. Would that qualify? Actually, I think my favorite patriotic song is "La Marseillaise," the national anthem of France. Its music is very stirring, although the lyrics are pretty horrific.
7. She has a perfume line with Coty that was a big seller at CVS during Christmas 2018. What's the last item you bought at a drugstore?
I was at CVS just this week. Had to replenish our supply of decongestant – the hubby has a cold. Caught it from me. (So sorry, babe.)
8. Faith Hill is the producer of a talk show on CMT called Pickler and Ben. Is the TV on as you answer these questions? If so, what are you watching?
No TV at the moment. Right now, it's 11am, and we don't usually have the TV on during the morning.
9. Random question: You've got a chip in your hand and three dips to choose from – guacamole, salsa, and onion. Where does your chip get dipped?
First, let me say Yum!  Those all sound really good. I've spent the last few months going through round after round of oral surgery, prepping for implants – and haven't really been able to eat a chip of any kind, with or without dip on it. But if conditions were ideal (and all the implants implanted), I'd definitely go right for the guacamole. Ole!

Saturday 9: The Champion

Wow, it's been a while. Haven't posted anything on this blog since back in September. Had some medical/dental/life issues pop up that really took a lot more time and attention and energy than I'd expected. It looks like things might be starting to settle down for a while (at least a little), so I thought I'd try to resuscitate it some.
......

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"The Champion"
by Carrie Underwood (2018)

1) This song is about doing what it takes to win. What's the most recent competition you won? (Yes, online solitaire counts.)
I can't remember the last time I entered any kind of competition. I'm not really much of a competitor.
2) The lyrics tell us to "go ahead and put your bets on me." Do you often play games of chance — like the office football pool, or slot machines, or the lottery?
Yeah, not a gambler, either. Never bought a lottery ticket. Never played a slot machine, or any kind of game for money. Too much OCD to take chances like that.
3) The video includes footage of young people competing in The Special Olympics. What's your favorite sport to watch? Is it the same sport you most enjoying playing?
Well, I haven't played any sports lately. In my youth, I liked softball and tennis; but it's been at least forty years since I picked up a bat or a racquet. I do like to watch them, though. And basketball. And football. And gymnastics. And golf. Hmmm. You would think I'm a very sporty gal, wouldn't you? ... But you'd be wrong
4) This week's featured artist, Carrie Underwood, first came to America's attention when she won on American Idol. Prior to competing on that show, she'd never been on an airplane. How old were you when you took your first flight?
I was definitely an adult. I think it was sometime back in the early '70s. My husband was in graduate school in Baltimore and we flew back to Texas for Thanksgiving one year. So I would have been 20-something.
5) Carrie loves horror and her favorite author is Stephen King. What book are you currently reading?
I love horror too, although I haven't read all that much Stephen King. Right now I'm reading a whodunnit — Sorry for the Dead, by Nicola Upson.
6) Carrie's duet partner on "The Champion" is rapper Ludacris. In addition to making music, he acts and has appeared in one Sam's favorite shows, Law & Order: SVU. What's your favorite "cop show?"
I don't think I've seen any of the current crop of cop shows. I used to like Miami Vice back in the '80s, but I don't really watch cop shows now. I do like mysteries, though, so I suppose these days my favorite show with cops in it is Midsomer Murders
7) Ludacris is a distant cousin of comedian Richard Pryor. Have you studied your family's genealogy?
Yes, I have. I love digging into family history, both for my family and my hubby's. Haven't really done much of it lately.
8) Soccer was a big deal in 2018, the year this song was released. According to Google, "FIFA World Cup" was the news story that generated the most internet searches. What's the last thing you "googled?"
Ludacris.
9) Random question: You're battling the flu. The doctor advises you to stay in bed a full five days. As you begin feeling better (around Day 3), do you continue to follow doctor's orders? Or do you get up and start moving before you're supposed to?
I'd probably be up before Day 3. I usually try to "bounce back" way too early, and then end up just making things worse. Besides, after working for civil service for many years, my husband has a "3 day" rule — he allows three days for sickness and then expects you to get back to work or bring a note from your doctor!

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Saturday 9: Venus in Blue Jeans

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"Venus in Blue Jeans"
by Jimmy Clanton (1962)

1. Like the dream girl described in this song, Sam is wearing jeans as she composes this Saturday 9. Is there a lot of denim in your wardrobe?
I wouldn't say there's a LOT of denim, but I do have a few pairs of jeans — mostly the "mom" variety.
2. Jimmy Clanton likens this girl to the Venus de Milo, the ancient Greek sculpture made of marble and now on display at the Louvre. Is there any marble in your home?
Hmmm. I don't think so. Granite countertops in the kitchen, but no marble.
3. He refers to his girl as "Mona Lisa with a pony tail." The Mona Lisa is also at the Louvre. What's the last museum you visited?
I love museum-going, but haven't done much of it lately. When we lived in Virginia, near Washington DC, we used to go to the Smithsonian museums all the time. I guess the last museum I've visited recently was the Blanton Museum in Austin, and that was about three years ago. There's a WWII exhibit in the visitors center at the Pearl Harbor Historic Site in Honolulu, that we toured when we were in Hawaii a few years ago. It's pretty extensive, but I'm not sure if it qualifies as an official museum, though.
4. This girl is so awesome, she's the 8th Wonder of the World! Without looking it up, could you name the other 7?
No. But I know there have been a lot of different lists of "Seven Wonders" through the ages. I could probably list a few of the Ancient Wonders, but I'm not sure about the modern choices.
5. Jimmy Clanton spent his entire professional life behind a microphone. After he quit selling records, he began spinning them as a DJ. Do you consider the sound of your voice one of your better qualities?
Once upon a time, I would have answered yes to this question. But as I've gotten older, asthma and allergies have done some pretty nasty things to my vocal chords. The hubby once told me my voice on the telephone sounded like a parrot squawking. He's such a sweetie.
6. At age 80, Mr. Clanton still performs. He averaged an appearance/month in 2018. Some of his fans were surprised that he has let his pompadour go completely white. Do you color your hair?
Not recently, although I have in the past. Thinking about maybe going a little blonder soon. I would love it if my hair would turn completely white, but I've just got ugly gray patches spreading around.
7. In 1962, when this song was popular, Americans were reading about 5-year-old First Daughter, Caroline Kennedy, and her pony, Macaroni. Tell us about a pet you had when you were very young.
My longest-lasting pet was my toy fox terrier Corky. Got him when he was a few months old and I was about 8 or 9, and he was still around when I went off to college. By then he was more my mom's pet than he was mine. He was a great little dog and used to wake me up in the mornings by jumping onto the bed and pulling the covers off me and onto the floor.
8. Decades later, Caroline Kennedy was the first woman to serve as US Ambassador to Japan. Have you ever been to Asia?
No, but I would love to go.
9. Random question: When talking among themselves, who do you think is more open and honest about sex — men or women?
Absolutely no idea how to answer that. I don't have a lot of conversations about sex, honest or otherwise.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Saturday 9: The Fool on the Hill

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"The Fool on the Hill"
by Sergio Mendes and
Brasil '66 (1968)

Chosen because Monday is April Fool's Day.

1. As an April Fool's prank, Taco Bell once announced they had purchased The Liberty Bell and renamed it The Taco Liberty Bell. Describe your perfect taco.
OK, any taco is pretty much perfect, just by definition: The taco is nature's most nearly perfect food. No, wait -- maybe that's milk. Anyway, my perfect taco would be in an extra crispy corn tortilla shell, have shredded beef, refried beans, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, cheese and salsa. And maybe some potato chunks -- the way they used to make them in the San Antonio of my youth. Unfortunately, I can no longer eat most of those things. Sad.
2. Similarly, as an April Fool's prank, the Ford Motor Co. was supposed to wipe out the national deficit by purchasing the naming rites to a beloved monument, renaming it the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial. What model car do you drive?
Currently we have an eight-year-old Ford Escape. Contemplating getting a second car for me to run around in.
3. In 1998, Burger King got in on the April Fool's Day fun by promoting a special "Left-Handed Whopper," designed to be easier for a leftie to hold. Describe your perfect burger.
My husband makes wonderful burgers -- beef patties grilled to a perfect medium-well doneness, his special secret sauce, lots of melted cheddar cheese, with pickle, onion and tomato slices, lettuce, and mustard. Yum! Again, most of that is stuff I just don't (or can't) eat anymore. I can't really remember the last time I had a burger. Sad, sad, sad.
4. In 1962, when color TV was still new, a Swedish station pranked viewers by telling them they could convert their black/white sets to color by cutting up a nylon stocking and stretching it across the screen. Of course, in 1962, more women wore nylons and screens were smaller. How big is your TV? Are there any nylon stockings in your home?
We just bought ourselves a new TV with a much larger screen than the others we've had. I think it's 65 inches. Great for watching widescreen movies -- we've watched 2001: Space Odyssey and Lawrence of Arabia on it, and it was a very cool experience. And yes, I do have some nylons stashed away in the closet somewhere. Never wear them anymore, though.
5. In 1957, the BBC ran an April Fool's story about how the Swiss were enjoying a "bumper spaghetti crop," with spaghetti literally growing on trees. Viewers who called the station, asking how to grow a spaghetti tree of their own, were told to place a sprig of spaghetti in a can of tomato sauce and hope for the best. Have you ever fallen for an April Fool's prank?
I fall for some sort of April Fool's prank or hoax or trick every year. I must be the world's most gullible person. I hate April Fool's Day.
6. When Crazy Sam was growing up, her mother would surprise her on April Fool's Day by slipping a rubber worm or plastic spider in her lunch box. When you were in school, did you more frequently brown bag it or buy your lunch in the cafeteria line?
All these food questions are making me very hungry. I might need to go have a little snack after this one.
In elementary school I usually took a lunch -- but in a lunchbox, not a bag. Somewhere around junior high (middle school to all you whippersnappers), I switched over to buying my lunch. Probably about the time my mother got fed up with getting up early to make a lunch for me.
7. This week's song was an international hit for Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. Because of the song's bossa nova arrangement, everyone assumed the lead singer, Lani Hall, was Brazilian. She was a folk singer from Chicago. Sergio Mendes discovered her at a charity benefit. Can you think of a time when doing good really paid off for you?
Paid off? Well, not really. But I always hope my good deeds do some good for someone, and I suppose they pay off in making me feel happier.
8. In 1968, when this record was popular, Pierre Trudeau became Prime Minister of Canada. Today his son holds that office. When did you most recently visit our neighbor to the north?
I have only been to Canada once, and that was at least forty years ago. It was in May or maybe June, and Toronto was lovely, but very cold.
9. Random question: Name three websites you visit every day.
Every day? Well, Amazon would be one, though I hate to admit it. And I guess GoodReads or Library Thing. And Google, of course -- does that count?

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Saturday 9: Waiting for a Star to Fall

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"Waiting for a Star to Fall"
by Boy Meets Girl (1988)

1. "Waiting for a Star to Fall" was literally inspired by a falling star. The singing/songwriting duo of Boy Meets Girl was at a big, outdoor concert and could have sworn they saw a falling star in the night sky. Have you ever seen a falling star?
I probably would call it a "shooting star." Yes, I've seen a lot of them. I'm old.
2. They offered this song to Whitney Houston, who declined to record it. Whitney did have hits with two other songs they wrote: "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" and "How Will I Know?" What's your favorite Whitney song?
I was never a Whitney Houston fan, so I don't think I could really say I have a favorite Whitney song. I used to sort of like the "How Will I Know" video on MTV, so that's the one I always associate with her.
3. Boy Meets Girl were George and Shannon, a husband-and-wife team originally from Seattle, WA. In 2016, Seattle was named America's most "bike-friendly city." Do you own a bike?
We have a stationary bike that we use for exercise. Other than that, no bikes. I once almost crippled someone by almost running into them with a bicycle. After that, my bike-riding days were over (except for the exercise bike).
4. George and Shannon met for the first time at a wedding. She was a guest, he was in the band. Think of the last wedding present you bought. Was it from the bride and groom's registry?
Well, it's been quite a while ago, but I think it was from a registry. Don't really remember what the gift was, though. Probably dishes of some sort.
5. In 1988, when this song was popular, 98% of American homes had a TV set. Today, that figure has dipped to 96%, presumably because Millennials are watching more content online. What's the last video you watched online?
That's an interesting statistic. Well, I don't watch movies or TV shows online, but I do watch short videos on YouTube, Facebook, and other websites. And the last one of those I watched was this "Waiting for a Star to Fall" video because I wasn't familiar with it.
6. 1988 saw the introduction of one of the most memorable slogans of all time: "Just Do It." Without looking it up, do you know what brand "Just Do It" promotes?
Nike, right? I've always thought it was sort of an odd advertising slogan, but it certainly caught on.
7. In 1988, Sonny Bono went from entertainer to Republican politician when he was elected Mayor of Palm Springs. Have you ever met the mayor of your town?
I don't think so. But I live in a small town and it's possible I've met him at some gathering and just didn't realize it or don't remember it. (I'm old.)
8. Michael Douglas took home the Oscar in 1988 for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street. The American Film Institute named Gekko one of the "top movie villains of all time." Do you think bad guys are as interesting as good guys?
Oh, definitely. Usually the bad guys are much more interesting.
9. Random question: Have you ever seen a photo of yourself naked? (Baby pictures don't count.)
Yes, I have. I was much younger and in much better shape.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

Saturday 9: Happy Holidays!

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, Christmas is the theme and Sam has provided a photo from her past....

1. As you can see, Sam loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. Yet some children are reluctant to climb into Jolly Old St. Nick's lap. Did you enjoy the tradition or were you shy? Or did you by pass it altogether — either because you wrote him a letter or because your family didn't celebrate Christmas?
I liked talking to Santa every year. I would wait in line for hours at one of the big downtown department stores. I think I did it until I was nearly adolescent. Can't prove it, though — there are no photos of me on Santa's lap.
2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?
I've been pretty good this year. I think I'd definitely make Santa's "Nice" list. Actually, I'm too arthritic to be very naughty.
3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?
We shipped a gift to family in Florida. Wish we could have delivered it in person.
4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?
This year the hubby and I decided to give ourselves a new big-screen TV for Christmas. Haven't bought it yet (Hubs is still doing his "research"), so it'll be a late gift. Also got ourselves some fitness trackers — an Apple watch for M, a Fitbit for me.
5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie? Have you seen it yet this year?
We're a little behind schedule in our Christmas movie watching this year. (Too many Spurs games to watch.) I'm not a huge fan of holiday movies, but M loves them. He has a long, long list of Christmas movies he likes to watch EVERY year. I like some of them more than others. I guess my favorite of the newer movies is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Of the oldies, I like The Bishop's Wife and Christmas in Connecticut and White Christmas. And even though I see it as more of a horror movie than a holiday movie, I have to see It's a Wonderful Life every year.
6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?
I think so, but not in many years. When we were dating (back in the Pleistocene Era) we used to go to the movies on most holidays.
7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?
No. Most of the company Christmas parties I attended were pretty tame. Not much of an opportunity for embarrassing moments. Fortunately.
8. What's your favorite beverage in cold weather?
Starbucks soy cappuccino.
9. Share a memory from last Christmas.
Last Christmas the Hubs and I both had the flu. Not a Christmas I want to remember. So far, we're both well this year. And I'm really hoping that continues.

Happy Saturday, everyone!

And Happy Holidays!

Saturday 9: Call Me (Montez, not Blondie)

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"Call Me" (1965)
by Chris Montez

1. Chris Montez sings that you can always call him, regardless of the hour. Do you believe that it's ever too late to phone someone?
Depends on who's calling and why. I'm usually not comfortable calling anyone after about 8pm unless it's really an emergency. If it's someone calling me — well, I guess the same rule applies. But there are people who can definitely call me at any hour if they need to. (Lookin' at you, Lissy-Lou. Hey I'm a poet!)
2. He insists that you can depend on him, even when your friends desert you. Who is someone you can trust to have your back, no matter what?
My husband. The most dependable person I've ever known.
3. Billy Crystal serenades Meg Ryan — via answering machine — with "Call Me" in When Harry Met Sally. Answering machines have been replaced by voice mail. Who most recently left you a voice mail?
Hmmm. Probably CVS letting us know a prescription was ready to be picked up. Or one of those robots telling me that I qualify for much lower rates on something. See how exciting my life is?
4. Chris Montez is a graduate of El Camino College in Torrance, California. The average daytime temperature in November in Torrance is 70º. How is the weather where you are today?
Sunny and warmer than it's been the last few days (writing this on Thursday morning). I think it's supposed to be in the 70s here today, too. The hubby is actually outside right now, tidying the yard a bit. The red cedar is keeping me indoors.
5. Today Chris actively promotes a healthy lifestyle to children. He was honored for his efforts by the group SOPA (Stop Obesity, Promote Activity). Do you believe you get enough exercise?
Not really. I do try to exercise everyday, but I could probably use more. We recently bought a new treadmill and I'm trying to use it more. Treadmill walking is boring, but much better than walking outside when it's cold or rainy.
6. Released in late 1965, "Call Me" became a big hit in 1966, reaching #2 on the charts. Even though it sold millions of copies and was certified as a Gold Record, it never hit #1. Is winning, or being the best, important to you?
Sometimes. However, I've never been hugely competitive. If I really care about something, I'll make a big effort, but it has to be really important.
7. In 1966, when this was playing on juke boxes, kids were watching Batman and Star Trek. If you had your choice of watching an episode right now, which would you choose: Star Trek or Batman?
Definitely Star Trek (I've always been a Trekkie).
But I used to enjoy the old Batman TV show, too. Haven't seen any of the Batman movies because I don't want to spoil my memories of Adam West as the kitschy super hero.
8. Also in 1966, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay was born. Do you enjoy cooking?
Hate it. Never have liked cooking and never have been any good at it. One goes with the other, I guess. Love to watch other people cook, though.
9. Random question — You have the opportunity to perform in the circus! Would you rather be shot from a cannon, or put your head in the lion's mouth?
Those are my only choices? I guess I'd pick the cannon since big cats are pretty terrifying. (Remember Roy Horn and the tiger?) But I'd much rather perform on the high wire or trapeze. As a kid, I thought I'd like to join the circus when I grew up. I used to climb up and walk around on the top bar of my swing set in the backyard. Drove my mother crazy, but I was really good at it. And lucky — never broke a bone and I'm still alive to tell the tale.

Happy Saturday, everyone!
Live long and prosper.

Saturday 9: Black Magic Woman

The Saturday 9  meme is hosted by Sam Winters. Nine questions posted every Saturday — sometimes random, sometimes with a theme. This week, the theme is...

"Black Magic Woman" (1970)

1. Black is this week's signature color because Friday, November 23, was "Black Friday," when retailers cut their prices and consumers flock to the stores. Did you score any "Black Friday" bargains?
Well, I'm actually starting this on Thanksgiving while I'm waiting for the turkey to get done. So no Friday anything yet. But it's not likely I'll be going out to do any major shopping on Friday. Too many crowds. Might buy something online.
2. On busy shopping days, carts often litter parking lots. After loading your items into your car, are you careful to return your shopping cart to the store or the designated cart receptacle?
Most of the time. If the weather is really bad or if my knees are giving me trouble, I might not be so conscientious about it. I sort of miss the old days when the stores had people to help you carry your stuff to your car.
3. Who on your gift list is hardest to buy for?
Everybody. I'm a terrible gift-picker-outer. Never know what to give anyone.
4. Feasting and football are also popular Thanksgiving weekend pastimes. Do your Thursday-Sunday plans include enjoying leftovers or watching a game?
There will definitely be football watching in our house. The Cowboys play today (Thursday), and the Longhorns have a game tomorrow. As for leftovers — I've tried to plan it so we won't have a LOT of leftovers this year, but the hubby loves eating the leftovers, so there will be SOME. [Update: We forgot to watch the UT game on Friday! Fortunately, they won without our support.]
5. Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade is an annual event. It began in 1924 as a local event in New York. Today it's nationally televised. Did you watch it?
I'm watching it right now. Well, not exactly watching, but it's on. I usually turn it on every year, but I don't really pay strict attention. So far, the Google ads have been more entertaining than the parade.
6. What did you give thanks for on Thanksgiving 2018?
Well, I'm thankful that M and I are both still here and doing pretty well, health-wise. I'm thankful that a couple of health scares this year weren't serious. Thankful for family and friends, and that the weather here isn't as awful as it is in most of the country right now. Actually, for me personally, things are going OK at the moment, so I've got quite a lot to be thankful for.
7. At the first Thanksgiving, there were no forks. Pilgrims ate with spoons and knives, and forks didn't become popular until the 18th century. Think about your Thanksgiving place setting. Did you have both a salad and a dinner fork?
No. If we were having guests, we might add a salad fork. If we were having salad. Which we're not.
8. Pies are a popular Thanksgiving dessert. What kind of pie did you enjoy? Or did you have ice cream? Or did you skip dessert?
Haven't had dessert yet, but it's going to be pumpkin pie. No ice cream or topping this year. I usually have Cool Whip, but forgot to buy it this year.
9. This week's featured band, Santana, was named for its founder, Carlos Santana. He was born in Mexico. When at a Mexican restaurant, what do you usually order?
Well, since we live in central Texas, we eat a lot of Mexican food. In some parts of the Austin area, there is literally a Mexican restaurant on every corner. And one in the middle of the block, too. I love it, even though it doesn't always love me. But I don't really have any one item that I always order. I do love tamales, but not every Mexican restaurant has them. I guess the one thing I usually do have is guacamole. Hmmm. Why am I so hungry all of a sudden?

Happy Saturday, everyone!
Have a great weekend.
